What Are the Three Types of Water Treatment?

The porous material acts as a barrier. It captures and traps particles, sediments, and even microorganisms. Filtration is effective in removing visible impurities. It can be further enhanced by using different types of filters to target specific contaminants.


Sedimentation is another physical water treatment technique. In this method, water is held in large tanks or basins. This allows the force of gravity to help the settling of heavier particles at the bottom.


Chemical Water Treatment


Chemical water treatment methods involve adding chemicals to the water to remove contaminants. These chemicals neutralize harmful substances or alter the properties of the water.


These techniques are often used to address dissolved impurities. That means materials such as metals, minerals, organic compounds, and microorganisms. 


One common chemical water treatment process is coagulation and flocculation. Coagulation involves the addition of chemicals to destabilize suspended particles in water.


Flocculation follows. This is where gentle stirring or mixing encourages the particles to clump together.


As a result, they form flocs. These flocs can then face removal through sedimentation or filtration.


Biological Water Treatment


Biological water treatment utilizes living microorganisms to break down contaminants in water. These microorganisms can include bacteria, algae, fungi, and protozoa. All these microorganisms perform natural processes to enhance water quality.


Aerobic treatment is a biological method that relies on oxygen-dependent microorganisms. These organisms decompose organic matter and pollutants in water.


Examples of aerobic treatment processes include activated sludge processes. This is where water passes over a medium coated with microorganisms. These organisms break down particles in the water.


These microorganisms use oxygen to break down and metabolize organic compounds. This results in the purification of water.


On the other hand, anaerobic treatment occurs in the absence of oxygen. It relies on specific bacteria that can thrive in such conditions. Anaerobic processes, such as anaerobic digestion, help break down organic matter. They convert it into biogas and stabilized sludge.
